Three little kittens. (Mittens, Moppet and Tom Kitten)

This is based on Beatrix Potters story 'The Tale of Tom Kitten'. (The pattern is written only for the kittens and the pattern for the mother cat is not posted). Materials:

US. # 1 knitting needles 
Poly fill for stuffing
Permanent markers: blue, black and pink.
White felt
Glue
Buttons
Red coloring pencil.
&
Worsted yarn:
Use white color yarn for face, body, legs,hands, ears and tail for all the three kittens.
For Mittens:
Use:
Shoes: pink yarn
Upper body: pink
Sleeves: pink and yellow for the border.
Skirt border: white, yellow and white.
Body of the skirt: pink
Shoulder straps: yellow
Neck band: yellow
Pocket: yellow.

For Moppet:

Use:
Shoes: orange yarn
Upper body: orange
Sleeves: orange and green for the border.
Skirt border: green, orange and green.
Body of the skirt: orange.
Shoulder straps: green.
Neck band: orange
Pocket: green.

For Tom kitten:

Use:
Shoes: red yarn
Upper body: red
Sleeves: red
Neck band: red.


Method:

(All the three kittens are worked using the same basic pattern. Please refer above, to know the colors of the yarn to make each kitten.)

Basic Kitten:

Shoes, legs, body and head.
Shoes:
*Begin at the lower edge and with the color required for shoes cast on 8 sts
Purl one row
Next row: inc K wise into every st - 16 sts
Beginning with a purl row st-st for 5 rows.
Next row: K 4, k2tog, ( k3, k2tog ) twice -13 sts.

Break off the yarn and join the color required for the legs.
Beginning with a purl row St-st for 9 rows .*
Break the yarn and leave the sts on the stitch holder.
Now knit the second leg in the same way till "*" but do not break the yarn. Facing knit side knit the 13 sts on the needle and also knit the remaining 13 sts from the stitch holder-26 sts.
Beginning with a purl row St-st for 5 rows for the lower body.
Break the yarn and join the color required for the upper  body, St-st for 6 rows.
Next row:( k4, k2tog) 4 times, k2 - 22 sts.
Purl one row.
Next row: ( k3, k2tog) 4 times, k2-18 sts
Purl one row.
Break off the yarn and join the color required for the head.
Inc k wise into every st - 36 sts
Beginning with a purl row st-st - 13 rows.
Next row: (k1, k2tog) to end - 24 sts.
Next row: purl
Next row: k2tog to end- 12 sts
B& t tightly.

To make up: join the row ends together. Leave about 2 to 3 inches gap near the head for the easy stiffing and to turn the piece right side out. Also leave the bottom of the legs open. Turn the piece right side out. Stuff the legs and the body. Gather the stitches at the bottom of both the legs and fasten off. Now stuff the head firmly and sew the gap and fasten off.
( center seam should go at the back of the doll.)

To form the neck take a length of yarn to match the head and gather the stitches near the neck and fasten off. 

Neck band:

With the color required cast on 24 sts.
Knit one row.
Cast off.

To make up: place the band around the neck and sew in place.

Ears:( make two pieces alike for each ear)

*With the color matching the face cast on 6 sts.
Beginning with a knit row St-st for two rows.
Continue in St-st and decrease one st at both ends until one stitch remains.
Cast off. 
Make one more piece in the same way.
Now place both the pieces on the right side matching the ends. Sew around the ears and stuff lightly before closing the gap. *

Repeat (*to *) for the other ear.

Now place the ears on the head and sew in place.

Eyes:
Cut two pieces of square out of white felt. Using blue and black permanent markers draw the eyes as shown in the picture. Then glue glue these on the face 10 rows below the forehead.

Nose: using pink yarn make three small horizontal stitches just below the eyes.

Mouth and whiskers: using a black permanent marker draw the mouth and whiskers as shown in the picture. Alternately these can be embroidered using the black yarn.

Red colored pencil or blush can be used to color the cheeks. 


Arms: ( make two alike)
Starting from the sleeves and With the color matching the upper body, cast on 7 sts.
Beginning with a knit row St-St for 4 rows.
Break off the yarn and join the contrasting color, G-st for 2 rows.
Break off yarn and join the color matching the face.
Beginning with a knit row St-st for 10 rows .
B&t tightly.

To make up:
Join the row ends together on the right side. Stuff firmly and sew the arms in place .


Skirt:
Beginning at the border of the skirt and Using the color required cast on 55 sts.
G-St for 2 rows. Break off yarn and Join a contrasting color and knit one row 
Next purl one row, break off this color and join the color required and G-St for 2 rows.
Now join the color required for the skirt and beginning with a knit row st-st for 10 rows.
Next row: ( K3, K2tog) to end - 44 sts.
Purl one row.
Next row: (K2, K2tog) to end -33 sts.
Cast off knit wise.


To make up: 
Join the row ends together, but leave one inch without sewing near the waist line . Turn the skirt right side out and with a crochet hook make few single crochet to form the loop. Sew this loop on one open end of the skirt near the waistline. Then on the other end sew a button.
Note: the center seam should go at the back. 

Shoulder straps : ( make two alike )
With the color required cast on 16 sts.
K one row
Cast off.
Sew the straps to the skirt.
Sew the buttons  below each strap in the front. Now put the skirt on the doll.

Pocket:

Using the color required cast on 8 sts.
Beginning with a knit row st-st for 8 rows, but knit the first 2 and last 2 sts on the purl row.
Cast off knit wise.

Make up :
Place the pocket in front of the skirt in between the shoulder straps three rows below the waist line. Sew all the three sides leaving the top open. Sew a button or embroider a flower on the pocket if desired.

Tail:

With the color matching the face cast on 9 sts.
Beginning with a knit row st-st for 8 rows.
Continue in st-st and decrease one st at each end until 3 sts remain.
B&t tightly.

To make up: 
Join the row ends together. Stuff the tail firmly. Sew the tail at the back just below the waist line. Make sure that the tail is sewn at the same position as the hole at the back of the skirt just below the loop, so that the tail can easily come out of the hole when the skirt is placed on the doll. 


Over -Alls:( make two pieces alike front and the back piece)

Starting from lower edge of the pant 
*With navy blue cast on 13 sts.
Beginning with a purl row st-st for 17 rows.*
Break off the yarn and leave the stitches on the stitch holder.
Now knit the second leg in the same way till "*" but do not break the yarn. Facing knit side knit the 13 sts on the needle and also knit the remaining 13 sts from the stitch holder-26 sts.
Beginning with a purl row St-st for 3 rows -26 sts.
Next row k2tog to end -13 sts.
Cast off knit wise.

Repeat the same steps for the back piece.

Bib: ( make 2 pieces alike )
With navy blue cast on 6 sts.
Beginning with a purl row st-st for 4 rows. 
Cast off knit wise.

Shoulder straps: ( make to alike )
With navy blue cast on 12 sts and cast off.

To make up: place the front and the back pieces together on the wrong side and join all the row ends. At back leave 1 inch open from the waist line, so that the tail can come out easily once the overalls are placed on the doll.

Attaching the bib:
Place the castoff edge of the bib in the middle of the overalls in the front and at the back and sew in place. 
Attach the straps on the either sides of the bib.

Oh, I love those illustrations in her books.

Lovely kittens. I have bought numerous books and soft toys over the years as I think every child should know Beatrix Potter stories. There are three all wrapped waiting for our new granddaughter who will be delivered on Thursday. These will add to the ones that I bought Willow when she was born.
I have the Beatrix Potter Knitting Book if anyone wants charts for any of the characters to add to sweaters.
